AI now answers questions about your shop. What Shopify’s Fall ’26 update teaches small businesses

AI 4 min read

More customers now ask an AI assistant before they ask you. “Does this shop deliver to Penang?” “Can I return it?” “Is it open on Sunday?” If the AI gets the answer wrong, you lose the sale, or you get an angry customer.

On 28 October 2026, Shopify released its Fall ’26 Edition, its twice-yearly product update. One feature goes straight at this problem. Merchants can now review and approve the facts that AI agents share about their store.

You don’t need to be on Shopify for the lesson to matter. Here’s what changed, and what any small business can do this week.

What Shopify announced

From Shopify’s official Fall ’26 Edition page and Help Center:

  • Your business details in AI channels. Shopify says merchants can “review and approve the facts that get shared with agents, including policies and FAQs,” and get suggestions to improve that content.
  • A knowledge base that AI agents read. In Shopify’s words, these facts are “the source of truth for AI agents for all non-product information about your store.” When a customer asks about your store in an AI chat, the agent can look up the answer there.
  • Nothing goes out without your say. Facts Shopify finds by scanning your website stay unpublished until you publish them. Shopify says it “never changes knowledge base content on your behalf.” (Facts linked to your Shopify admin, such as store policies and contact details, are published when they’re created.)
  • Selling inside AI chats. The same update lets merchants sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app, with checkout powered by Shopify. Shoppers buy in the chat, and the merchant manages orders in the Shopify admin. For now, this is for eligible stores that sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia.
  • A smarter storefront chat. Shopify says shoppers using Shopify Inbox can get personalized recommendations, start checkout from the chat, and “easily reach staff.”

The knowledge base covers the questions customers really ask: returns and refunds, shipping and delivery, payment methods, contact details, and what the business is about. Shopify notes the published facts are public and can be used by third-party AI platforms, and a store can hold up to 1,000 facts.

Not every feature reaches every market yet. Shopify’s Help Center says that to sell through Google AI Mode and Gemini with direct checkout, you must sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia (your store can be based in any country), and direct checkout is still rolling out. The knowledge base help page lists no country limits. If you sell on Shopify in Malaysia, check Sales channels > Agentic in your own admin before you plan around these features.

Why this matters for small businesses

According to Shopify’s 2026 Global Holiday Retail Report, cited in its Newsroom on 6 October 2026, 65% of shoppers say they’ll use AI for at least one shopping task this season. The point is simple. AI assistants are becoming a front door to your business, and they can only be as accurate as the facts they can find.

If your prices, opening hours or return rules are missing, old, or scattered across different pages, an AI may guess. A guess that sounds confident is worse than “I don’t know.”

How to keep AI answers about your business accurate

You can do all of this without new software.

1. Write one clean “facts” page. Put your prices or price ranges, opening hours, delivery areas, payment methods, and return and refund rules in one place on your website.

2. Make every channel say the same thing. Check your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page and WhatsApp Business profile. If your hours are different on each one, fix them.

3. Add the questions customers really ask. Look at your last month of customer chats. The questions you answer again and again belong in your FAQ.

4. Date it and review it. Change a price or policy? Update the facts page the same day. Put a “last updated” date on it.

5. Decide what a person must handle. Complaints, refunds and anything unusual should go to your team, not to an AI guessing.

Where ThinkChat fits

The same rule applies to the AI that talks to your customers directly. ThinkChat is a multi-channel AI Chat Agent, not a chatbot. WhatsApp is the main channel in Malaysia, connected through Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Platform API or a QR scan, and ThinkChat also works on other channels like Instagram, Facebook Messenger and website chat. It answers customers from the information you approve, and hands the chat to a person when a customer needs one.
